I’ve wanted a place to grow vegetables and flowers for longer than I can remember. I get it from my mom, who has always found awe in the details of nature, is a skilled and attentive gardener, and who has always encouraged sticking one’s hands in the dirt to get back in touch with one’s self. I am privileged to now have a space to grow vegetables and flowers directly into the ground, rather than in containers that can easily be emptied, lifted or moved.
Although the backyard consistently feels like a work in progress, there is a rhythm to the cyclic tending that is calming. Navigating a short growing season, along with unpredictable bouts of hail, heatwaves, high winds and frost creates unique and often surprising experiences every year. This blog is simply a place to document what happens in the garden, with the hope that an archive of monthly journals will develop into better annual preparation and planning. I do not espouse to be an expert in the field of gardening; these writings are merely an attempt to mark the changes, attempts, failures and pleasures of having a space to practice the privileged art of growing.
