Winter

The winter solstice fell on December 21st of this month. I finished an Anthony Doer book titled Cloud Cuckoo Land in which a character named Konstance says, “A seed is a little sleeping plant, a container to protects the little sleeping plant, and a meal for the little sleeping plant when it wakes up.”  As we head into winter, I think about all the little sleeping plants under the soil waiting to be woken up in the Spring.

December 3rd

Potted up a root-bound houseplant and collected ‘baby’ succulents (dropped leaves with roots. I found a few small hen and chicks and planted them in a 6-cell-pack. I winnowed and packed away all the remaining seeds.

December 5th

I watered the outside plants in the greenhouses. Much to my surprise a few violas are still blooming in eth freeze, as is one gorgeous magenta Knautia bloom in the side yard. In one of the cold frames, the Zeo Lights Calendula is bursting into bloom in a variety of pinks, yellows and oranges.

December 8th

I am at war with a bulb digging squirrel in the front. I place both red pepper flakes and used coffee grounds down on eth top of the tempting containers and so far, it appears to have worked.

December 16th

Another day above 50; I watered the outside plants.
