Seed Brains

February 23rd marks 12 weeks from the last anticipated frost date of May 17th. Eggplants can be started 10-12 weeks prior to the last frost, and as I place the seedlings in the soil, there is still snow on the ground outside. I am still awestruck by the magic of seeds – each one has the potential to bring forth a living thing that, if looked after properly (and the seeds are not too old) will hopefully one day provide sustenance.

Even more amazing is the idea that after a plant has begun to grow, taken root and produces new seeds, it remembers, in a way, the multifaceted conditions during its growth, storing details away for the next generation (Denver Post).

The maple trees are sending out their buds right now, and the bulbs are pushing through the cold soil to test for Spring. Birds are everywhere these days, whistling and chirping and chattering away at the feeders. It feels as though everything is coming alive once  again.
