January brought with it a polar vortex mid-month. There are no signs of the hellebores or snowdrops yet.

- On January 14th, I planted 4 Quick Snack Cucumber seeds Botanical Interests indoors in 6″ tall and wide pots but did not soak the soil first. Every time I watered, the water in the pot displaced the soil but did not get wet. On January 19th, I soaked the soil (no sprouts were seen) and planted 3 more seeds in 2 pots. This hybrid seed is parthenocarpic, meaning it does not need pollinators to produce fruit, and it reaches maturity in 38-45 days. The harvest date is scheduled for early March (3/5/25) with cucumbers 1.5 and 2.5 inches long.
- The Aerogarden Dianthus is stunning with dark and light pinks and white. The African daisies, Gazania, are in full bloom with burnt yellows and oranges.

- Four cucumber seeds are sprouting. The snow has not stopped today.

- The Gazania flowers close up each evening and remain closed until they are comfortable with the amount of light from the Aerogarden. These are flowers that also close up on cloudy days because they are highly sensitive to light and need full sun to open. The flowers sense light, and when darkness pervades, they close as a natural response to protect themselves. Check out this timelapse video.
