I started with a basic Ahnentafel system for direct ancestors and then use a modified Dollarhide numbering system, developed by Terry Cole, for nearly everyone else. It helps address the challenge of requiring a negative number for new generations or renumbering everyone once a new generation is born.
I ran into some additional issues with TNG, the genealogy software I use, who would not accept an asterisk as part of a relative’s identification number.
